Is there an official AT&T version for OS 5?

For what device? You've posted in the General Section of the forum.

So, in general, the answer to your question is "yes, for the 9700 device."

For the 9700, yes.

For the 8900, 9000, 8520, no.

My model is a Curve 8900. Why do you think it has taken so long for AT&T to release OS 5 for BBs? Isn't it supposed to be the same OS as for any other BB?

I "think" it takes them longer, because AT&T is traditionally one of the slower carriers to release major OS upgrades, mainly because they have to train all the CSRs for troubleshooting and working with customers when upgrading and having lingering issues after the upgrade.

Carriers independently release OS code as they test. Some carriers have higher standards for their release code. At&t has probably the highest standards compared to other carriers.

AT&T also has a history of monkying with the firmware versions, deleting some features or locking down others. Recall that AT&T-branded Bold 9000's couldn't turn off 3G while all others could. Even updating the OS couldn't undo this. So getting the OS to interact with the devices the way AT&T insists can take longer.
