Default BIS Sync - Purge emails from handheld only - Help please

Please Login to Remove!

Hello,
I have a customer who has a number of Blackberry devices using BIS (Blackberry Internet Service) to sync e-mail to Exchange. They currently have the “Synchronization” turned on on the BIS. However, they would like to be able to purge e-mail from the handheld ONLY without it deleting e-mail from exchange/outlook.

Does anyone know if that is even possible with Sync checked…..and what other options they may have if it isnt?

Thanks alot for your help.

There is not "sync" of emails with BIS. You or they have some confusion there.

Try this, on the device (you failed to state what model, it would help to know, to pinpoint the exact setting) try opening the messages folder > Menu key > Options > Email Reconcilation > and select the email address in question and set it to delete ONLY on the handheld. And save.

Now, return to the Messages listing, scroll to the topmost date header and press Menu > Delete Prior.

Thanks for the quick response.

If BIS does not Sync, what does the Synchronize option do that is located under the General Settings tab?

I didnt give an exact phone model because they have different users using different models.

Where is this General Setting tab located? In your Messages > Options?

Give me a couple example of models affected?

BIS email "pushes" to the device, and in some cases (Gmail, Yahoo, IMAP) it will "reconcile" from the email server to the device. For instance, if you delete a message in your Gmail account on the webmail view from a PC, that delete will "reconcile" to the device and delete the message there as well. Similarly, if you read a message on the handheld device, that "read" will reconcile to the server.

So, since there are varying degrees of OS releases for devices, knowing where this General Settings > Synchronize option is located might help. Are you sure they are not on BES, or even OWA?

One of the BB's I am working with on this issue is an 8830. They are definitely running BIS and communicating with an exchange server. There is also some OWA involved I believe. The General Settings tab I was looking at was inside the BIS when creating an account. It sits right next to Advanced Settings and at the bottom of where you enter email account name, reply to, username, pw, signature, and auto BCC is a check box for Synchronize Deleted Items.

I guess my main question is that if an email is deleted from the BB, even if I go into preferences and tell it to only delete on the handheld, will it delete on the server too since this synchronize option is checked.

Open the Messages folder and go to Options > Email Reconciliation and make sure Delete On is set to Handheld, NOT Mailbox & Handheld. This way when an email is deleted on the BB itself, it will disappear only from the BB. If you set it to Prompt, the user will be asked each time to manually select where the deletion occurs. That works too, as long as the user doesn't select Mailbox & Handheld.

And remember: on BIS there is no going back to "undelete" mail that has been nuked from the server. So if the option is set to Prompt and the user makes the wrong choice (I've done that) the email is just plain gone. The Prompt setting is good for deleting those few spam messages that always seem to slip through, but it's dangerous in that a critical email can get permanently deleted by a distracted user.
