BB 9500 as a modem on Windows 7 x64
I have spent 3-4 days, trying to get my BlackBerry 9500 Storm work as a modem on my HP HDX 18 notebook using Windows 7 x64 bit:
I have installed most recent DM as of March 31, 2010. I saw that people were having problems using BT connection for tethering BB. So I disabled Bluetooth on the BB, removed the paired BT (BB) device from the PC. Just wanted to set up USB tethering mode. Now the Control Panel / Devices doesn’t show any exclamation mark. However, when I start DM, it doesn’t show IP modem option, this is what I see (might be called differently in English version):
BB Media Sync, Application Loader, Restore / Recovery, Transferring data from one BB to the other, Synchronization.
Should IP modem be shown as well? It doesn’t show for me. Communication is active via the USB cable, I can access files, update the phone, etc.
I even installed the USB / Modem drivers from RIM site.
I tried using manual tethering settings based on this site:
l0pht.com/dildog/bb-win-tether/index.html]Quick and Dirty Windows 7 Blackberry Tether
The most basic problem I face is that when I get to this point „You'll get a dialog that looks like this (this dialog doesn't have COM4, because i wrote this tutorial after installing the modem...)” xxx61663; this window that’s shown on the webpage I never get. When I click next, it just installs modem, and list of devices shows Standard 33600 bps modem with a yellow exclamation mark next to it. I cannot edit properties, and I cannot chose port. All this, even though Virtual Serial Ports are available shown in Step 2.
Any help would be very much appreciate, spent so many long hours trying to solve this but it's just not working.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks a lot for any help in advance! (y)
Well, the modem showing up as a 33.6 is good, but the yellow ! means its having an issue (wrong driver, no driver, etc).
2nd, with the DM and ip modem button not being there could mean that its not supported for that carrier (meaning voda doesnt allow tethering)
I would contact voda and see if tethering a blackberry is even allowed (im in the us so i have no clue if its allowed even)
The IP Modem option doesn't show up until the first time you plug in the device. I think it has to check and see if it's allowed. I'm not sure just what the requisites are for it to show up. As TheRinger posted, I'd check with your carrier and see if it's allowed.
Thanks for both of your answers!
This is not the case, I am using Vodafone Hungary and Vodafone customer service just confirmed that BlackBerry 9500 can be used as a modem, APN settings are correct as well. So it is not about the cellphone service.
I install the most recent Desktop Manager, but the IP modem doesn't show. And in the Devices list in Control Panel, there is no modem install. Then I install the USB Modem driver from RIM page. Then the 33600 bps modem appears in the list of devices (control panel) but there is the yellow excalamtion. It say's it cannot be loaded, code 31. I even edited the ip_modem_configuration.xml file and added Vodafone Hungary.
What could be causing this? Any more ideas?
Please keep on sharing your ideas with me and I'll try everything. I really would like to get this tethering/IP modem thing working.
Anyone can confirm the vendorID for Vodafone Hungary? I've found "148" but I am not suer if it's correct. Voda Hungary was not in the above mentioned XML file by default by the way.
Thanks for the help! (y)
Hello! Im new here and I am having very similar problems. I followed the quick and easy set up site i found also for windows 7. I have a new Bold 9650 and I am on the sprint network in the US. It gives me error messages all over. I have looked all over the forums and cannot find any instructions on how to get my phone set up as a modem via usb or bluetooth. Can anyone please help me?!!!! I can really use some help. I am not a programer so a place with step by step instructions migh be the way to go for me. thank you in advance!
Use a program like Tether or PDAnet. Dont know the legal issues there but they work. I use Windows 7 and dont have a problem.
