Talking 8530 on WiFi can not access a local server

My Sprint 8530 WiFi works well for getting email and browsing the public internet, but when I am connected to my private home WiFi network, I cannot access local web-servers from the blackberry browser, even though I can ping these servers from the BB8530.
For example: My networked printer has a little web-server that will display toner levels and other statistics. To access it I specify its IP address in my laptop browser, and the web-page opens (the laptop is connected to the same WiFi network).
When I try to ping it from the 8530 I get a quick response. When I try to access it from the BB browser I get the following:
"HTTP Error 504: Gateway Timeout"
When I click the details button I get:
"The following error was encountered: Connection to X.X.X.X failed. The system returned: (111) Connection Refused......
Generated by Blackberry.Internet.Browsing.Service (squid/2.7.STABLE7).

Any ideas why is the BB browser blocking access to local IP addresses or how to resolve it?

Thanks,

Use the Hotspot browser... not the BlackBerry browser.
