Default Qustions about the BB and BB 9650

Please Login to Remove!

Hello All,

I am a newbie who does not know that much about the BB, I mean I've held one a few times and explored it in the store a few times, but my knowledge is very limited in regards to it. I was wondering if some of you can please help me out.

I am considering purchasing the Blackberry 9650 from Sprint when it comes out (currently have an unlimited data plan). My issue is that I will be leaving for the summer to go overseas to Dubai, what capabilities will my BB have over there if I am not on a network? What will the Wifi allow me to do, will I be able to receive/send emails? Will the BBM feature work through WIFI for me? Can I browse the internet? I've read on some posts that a Data plan is needed, however the rep at the store said the BBM can work through the WIFI , however I am not sure if it will work when I am overseas and not on sprints network?

I know this is a global phone, however, I believe I will not be sprints services overseas. Can I just switch it to WIFI mode and still have functionallity?

Thanks in advance

To use email and BBM, you need a BB data plan. You can use WiFi for these functions only if you have the data plan and the proper service books from your carrier, since they are RIM related services. The store rep was incorrect.

You can unlock it and use a local SIM in the device and get a BB data plan from them if the carrier in Dubai supports BBs.

thank you for the response

Is it easy to unlock the 9650? I know sprint is a little different than ATT&T and T-mobile.

Will I still be able to use the regular browser with just the plain old WIFI out there? What about other IM clients like yahoo messenger and AIM?

IF I can open the internet browser through WIFI out there, would I be able to log in to my gmail through the browser?

Did you read response - all of it?

You can unlock the GSM portion to use on a GSM network. Contact Horizon WirelessOnline if Sprint won't do it for you.

Sprint BB's come unlocked.

EDIT - check on the pre-paid options in that area. Not all provide BB data.

Sprint has international data too. They provide a SIM card for European/Asian/Middle Eastern travel that comes pre-installed.

With Sprint you'll need an Everything Data Plan, or a Simply Everything Data Plan. You'll have to add international data roaming to the plan you get. Once you get that, you should be able to use all the data services overseas.

thanks for the help.

I currently have a simply everything plan, however the international data plan for the country is about $0.016 / KB data, and 3.49 voice/minute. So I'm not sure if I'm better off with that plan or just unlocking it and getting service over there.

So if I just got on a plane and got off over there, would the WIFI function of the BB essentially be useless if I don't have a data plan from over there, or the sprint international plan.

Sorry for all the rookie questions, just really new to all this,
