I recently changed from an 8310 to 8900. On the 8310 if a message (email or text) was received the LED would change to red and stay red until the message was read. On the 8900 it changes to red for a few minutes then back to green even before the message has been read, can this been changed to stay red until the message has been read?

nope, its a set amount of time to flashes, then stops, regardless of message read.

You can get a third party application which will allow you to adjust the LED alert times and colors.
