| Media Player? Is there or will there be some sort of media player for the Blackberry 7100?

| I doubt you'll see one anytime soon. The audio capabilities of BB devices are minimal at best right now. Hopefully in the future when they become more mainstream phones we might see other addons such as cameras, expansion ports, mp3 capabilities and the like.

| I've had several 7230's and 7510's apart but have never figured out which chip is actually the CPU. I'm curious about the MHz rating.
At least the Mobitex ones had a CPU that said i386 on it.

| I saw a java video demo on the BlackBerry -- it was only 256 colors and went only about 2-3 frames per second.
However, I agree a music player would be much more useful. It will unfortunately kill battery life, although probably less than if you were talking on the phone continuously. (Less power needed for antenna).
Only the 7100 series has sound that is technically good enough for music playback, but nobody has written a music player for the BlackBerry yet. Not sure about other recent models such as 7290 or 7520 though. | | Offline

| yyjjll,
I can't find the original site. But I wouldn't bother -- it was only a novelty.
It may be possible to do MP3 on a 7100 series if the ADPCM format can be enabled (the 7100 theoretically supports it; the OS needs to be updated for it). Then a software program could convert MP3 into ADPCM in runtime. You'd only be able to hold about 2 MP3's in the 7100 memory, though. Really mainly useful for ringtones from MP3 files, anyway.
Also the, multipurpose EV-DO chip in the 7250 seems powerful enough to also do complex music too, but I doubt the power would be ever harnessed by RIM, since they probably chose that chip for the 1X/EVDO capabilities rather than the secondary capabilities of that particular chip (i.e. there wasn't a suitable 1X/EVDO chip that skipped the extra features that RIM didn't want -- thus they bought the chip anyway, and left other functionality unused) | | Offline

| Mark: What are the MIDI ringtone capabilities of the 7100? How many simultaneous chords/tones does it support?
(I hope I'm using the correct terminology here, but I see some phones can do 16, some 24, and a few do 32) | | Offline
