You are going to need a blackberry data plan for the services you are seeking.

You did well by coming here before purchasing.

Please read this first >> Buying a BlackBerry off eBay - BlackBerryFAQ. Even if it's not purchased thru eBay, they are still good rules to follow.

Also, you will get "all" blackberry services if your carrier provides a BIS / blackberry data plan and you sign up for it which will be an additional cost. BB messenger works with the data plan.

And read this: Buying a BlackBerry off eBay - BlackBerryFAQ

Good information no matter where or from whom you purchase a used BB. Not as easy as buying a used cell phone.

To get the BB services such as email, BBM, etc. you will need a BB data plan from your carrier.

FYI that article refers to ebay, but it applies anytime when buying a second hand blackberry.
Be carteful. Buy from a reputable source with a track record, and know that you can get your money back if you are not satisfied.

One more question - why are you buying an older BlackBerry? It has limited memory and has been around for quite a while...

Buy the best you can afford. See if a reconditioned model from your carrier is within your budget.

By best I mean newer model, more memory, ability to run the newer operating system versions. See what you carrier is selling now.

Carrier is your service provider.

That would depend on the network you plan to use it on, and what they offer.
Most carriers do not offer blackberry data plans on PAYG.

Bunny, it sounds like you need to slow down and do some research. Blackberrys are different. It may not be the smartphone you need.

Read the FAQ and browse the forum and look at the questions being asked and answered.

People do use the blackberry without a data plan, but only those who know going in what they are doing are happy; those who are surprised to find they want the service but didn't want to pay for it end up extremely disappointed.
