How do turn off the "convert to upper case with holding down the key" feature. This wreaks havoc with inputting passwords, as the feature slips in an upper case letter when I want lower case and I'm not aware of it.

You can't turn that off. Just don't hold the key down so long.

Yeah, you only need to tap the required key to type a normal lower case character. You can always type the password into a message, ensure it's written in the correct case then copy and paste it into the required password field.
