Question Confused about wi-fi on AT&T

Please Login to Remove!

I have gotten so much conflicting information lately I'm not sure what to believe. I am thinking of buying an Unlocked Blackberry 8320. I currently have service on AT&T but do not subscribe to any data plans. I get very poor coverage at my home and wanted to get a Blackberry with wi-fi and use my home wireless router to make calls. Although I may upgrade my plan later on but for now I wanted to purchase a Blackberry but did not want to extend my contract. Before I make this purchase can anyone tell me if I will be able to make calls on the Blackberry through my wireless network. I have read that you can not use any Blackberry through AT&T using wi-fi because the UMA will not work unless you subscribe to their data plans then others say there are ways to get around that. Please set me straight before I make this purchase. Thank You

No, AT&T do not operate UMA.

However, AT&T periodically sweep their database for IMEI's, once a blackberry is recognised that doesn't have a blackberry data plan attached to it, they will automatically add it.

So does that mean if I use my current sims card in the blackberry and they find it they will automatically upgrade my plan. If thats the case I just as well get their free phone and extend my contract. Guess that got you either way.....

yes, correct.
AT&T require a blackberry data plan for all blackberries on their network.
It is therefore within their rights to add the plan to your account, if you have not already done so.
