Default Help! Accidentally dropped my BlackBerry in a puddle and now it's not working!

Please Login to Remove!

Hey there.

I bought my BlackBerry Bold 9700 a few months ago and everything was going fine until today when I accidentally dropped it in a puddle. The puddle was, admittedly, fairly deep and I imagine the phone was completely submerged for around 3 seconds. I took out the battery and sim card after like 3 minutes and put all of the components in a towel for 4 hours to dry them off, but it's just completely broken. Whenever I type it comes out as gibberish (for example, "would you like to go to the shops?" comes out as "wouild nyoui nliyke nto ngo nto nthe nshopis?i" and it keeps locking itself. It also keeps telling me about the media card.

If it helps, the first time I tried to switch it on after drying it, the light stayed red and it had what I can only describe as a loading bar, which when finished displayed my usual interface.

Is there any way I can fix this safely? I have insurance but I'm not sure if it would cover this?

Thanks in advance!

Meozy.

EDIT: I was just searching around and somewhere said to check about the two litmus papers (on the battery and near the golden prongs?). They're both red unfortunately. Would insurance for accidental damage cover this and allow me to get a new one, or am I completely screwed..?

Leave the battery out and put it in a bag of rice for a few days ( 4 or more ) and it may work. Chances are the water indicator has tripped and it wont be replaced by the carrier. This is worth a try so go to it.

You have probably fried it by turning it back on before it was completely dried out so if there was any chance before that, probably none now.

While this will not be covered under warranty, if you do have insurance, it may very well cover it subject to any deductible. Contact your insurance company to find out for sure.

The BlackBerry gods must love me! I went to sleep with the phone wrapped in a towel and now it's working fine! Should I still try to get a replacement (the two litmus papers are red) or should I just leave it and be more careful in future?

P.S. I've got full insurance with accidental damage.

I dont see how a towel could dry the phone but if so that's good. I would still bag it in with rice to absorb the remaining moisture.

also go buy a lottery ticket, you seem to be lucky!!!

Well I just wiped all the components with a dry paper cloth and left them wrapped up in a bundle of clothes and towels. I, unfortunately, didn't read the reply about rice as my internet cut out but luckily it all worked.

Would you still recommend to buy some rice? It's working perfectly well and nothing's going wrong at all.

Buy the rice you have nothing to lose. bag it for some time. It will absorb any left over moisture.

and go buy that lottery ticket.

Cheers man, do you just put the whole phone in the rice or do you take out the battery, sim card and media card?

And yeah, got my ticket for Wednesday!

Take the battery, sim and media card out. Leave the cover off the back and place the phone in the rice for 4-5 days.

READ the FAQ that Daphne already posted above.
