Default Blackberry IP Addresses?

Please Login to Remove!

Folks,

Kind of a strange question.
Could this IP address have possibly come from someone using a BlackBerry device?

68.7.217.86

That IP is registered as the following:

Cox Communications Inc. SDRDC-68-6-0-0 (NET-68-6-0-0-1)
68.6.0.0 - 68.7.255.255

Blackberry go through Blackberry server to get to the internet, I have learned they are in Canada (Eh....), from going to Google.com and it think you are in Canada and other sites do the same. I am intrested in why you are concered with this.

Hopfully this helps a little.

I'm a moderator at another message board, and we're trying to figure out if someone is posting from home or their blackberry. That's the deal...

Thanks for the help. So in other words, if they're posting from that IP, they couldn't possibly be using their BlackBerry. Correct?

correct. it shows the IP address of the BlackBerry Internet Gateway. just do a query against www.arin.net or www.dnsstuff.com and it will show it as being owned by Research in Motion. the reverse host lookup will show blahblahblah.blackberry.net as the host.

does all data go through RIM? That seems counter intuitive to have the browser go through an intermediate server rather than just through the wireless carrier as the wap does.

Check the Web server logs then. The User-Agent portion of the http header tells you what kind of client. You'll clearly be able to see if it's a BB.

Don't look for IP because that will be the IP of the BES (if it's real world), or of the WAN gateway if it's using NAT.
