Hello,

the following happened to me last weekend: I own a BlackBerry 7290, it was switched on, lying around in my room. At about 2-3 a.m. I recieved some SMS messages from my carrier (O2, Germany) that I had downloaded 4 games, however, I didn't notice as the device was set to silent and I was sleeping. Nobody did enter the room (it was locked), and I for sure didn't download any game as I was sleeping at that time, never downloaded anything using the BB before and probably never will. So the next day I called my carriers hotline, and they told me that the games were downloaded over the internet, from my BB, and that the games were purposely selected, so no random "BB-gone-wild-thing".

What I know is that the BB was switched on that night and was showing that it is connected to the network (GPRS). BlueTooth was off.

Any idea what could have happened?

Thanks,

Rumpelchen

A SCAM SMS perhaps? I have heard of that happening. Did you dispute the charges for the games (if any)?

Yes, I disputed the charges and got them back. I also made the carrier lock the internet connection until I find out what happened. I never responded to any SMS from somebody I don't know. I'm not much into mobile phones, but I'm an experienced internet user, so I know how to handle Spam, Scam and things like that.

But you see that I really would like to find out what happened. Fortunately the BB is on a pre-paid card, so that's probably the reason the "whoever" stopped downloading games - there wasn't any credit left.

I have seen this happen by spoofing the email address and generally from another PC. This must be a new one for a blackberry. I donxxx8217;t think itxxx8217;s related to the 7290 and hope this does not become another thing we have to watch for. Generally the scam is hidden in a charge on the cell bill so people who donxxx8217;t check the bill get taken. It involves not only games but subscription services. Getting the carrier to drop the charge is sometimes very difficult and takes multiple calls to stop the bill ad on. Count yourself very lucky if they stopped and refunded on the first call
