Thumbs down Torch 9800 Freeze and Lag

Please Login to Remove!

I received a new 9800 from AT&T, moving from the Bold 9700. I had it for less 4 days before deciding to return it for a refund and a move back to my Bold. From the moment I got it, it consistently froze for no less than 10 seconds each and every time I unlocked the phone. It also lagged in between operations frequently. Became frustrating beyond usability, tolerance and forgiveness.

I was not using any encryption, which some thought might have been the freeze culprit. I also turned off geo-tagging in the camera, which helped a little.

What I did learn was that RIM decided to go with an old processor from a previous model which IMHO is a reasonable explanation as to why the processor cannot keep up with the demands of a touch screen and new operating system.

All in all, very disappointing experience. I have had about every Blackberry model since 2004 and this by far is the worst one I have used. I have experienced an upgrade and enhancement in each model that I used except for this unit. This one just does not work.

To make matters worse, when I went back to my Bold, the data was corrupted and caused my information to crash my Bold's interface. The menus were not accessible and I could not open any menus from the home screen. I now need to rebuild from scratch all of my data. Just what I planned on doing this week, NOT!

Upgraded to os 6.0.0.161 - all new devices are buggy (ever heard of the iPhone antenna problem) and new OS generally cure many of the initial problems.

Sorry you had problems. And glad you returned it.

When I am wrong, I admit when I am wrong. After BLASTING RIM for putting out a bad product, I starting thinking about why, are they are that incompetent that they would put out a product that just does not work, or would they? So I pulled the Torch out of the RMA return envelope before I sent it back and did the following based on a suspicion that I had about why I was having problems.

If you are doing enterprise activations, that may apply to you.
I did a full backup of my old phone and put that in a file. We then reset my profile on the BES. Allowed that to sync. I restored to the Torch CERTAIN databases, including autotext and browser favorites. Then did a new enterprise activation. I did not install any third party software.

Phone works fine now. I will slowly add applications that I use to see if this causes a problem. My thinking is that somewhere, somehow, a file got corrupted and caused the freezing and delays.

I suggest that you do the same if you are experiencing this issue especially if you are migrating from BBOS 5 to 6. I am currently using OS 6.0.0.141

Now I can truly see if I like this device.

Default Lag is Back!

Phone worked ok once I did a complete wipe of my profile on the BES and the phone. Now that I have been using it for a while, the lag is back. Not as bad, but getting worse as time progresses. Not very happy.

Default memory utils

Have you tried a memory util? I've had similar problems on my 8520. I've used memory up and memory booster. Both seem to help quite a bit. Neither are free though.

Have you updated the OS to 6.0.0.214?

If you had read NJBlackberry's comment on upgrading the OS you might have avoided this.
