It depends on how you set up the sync options in the Desktop Manager, and your Contacts Program capabilities on your PC. If you do a backup form Desktop MAnager, it will save the BB phonebook and everything else for restoring in case of need.

Hope this helps.

You are talking about 2 things, backup&restore and syncing, completely different animals. The backup&restore are extractly what they sound like, used to backup your BB and restore it in case of a failure.

When you sync the BB to Outlook, the software looks for difference, if it finds new contacts on the BB not in Outlook it will add them and vise versa, If the same contact exists in both, but the info is different, it will make them match. There are options in the sync to determine which one wins. I normally have it set up so I see the differences and can pick the winner if need be.

You install the Desktop Manager as a NON-BES version and then connect you BB with a USB cable and go into the DM and do a sync-now. There are options to sync contacts, calendar and notes. It really is pretty easy, I would maintain the contacts in Outlook (just an easier UI) and then sync it up
