Default What to do with old BlackBerrys?

Please Login to Remove!

We have a lot of our users wanting upgrades from 7100s to the 8700.

What do other companies do with these old BlackBerrys when a user upgrades? I am starting to collect a very large amount of 7100s.

Ebay is not an option as the accounting department would go nuts. Does Cingular have any type of trade in programs? Trade in maybe 3 7100s for a 8700 or something.

I would guess you could try to see if the provider will take them back as a trade, many companies donate old equipment to charity, as they can write it off for more than it is really worth or more than you would get on trade since your provider might give you a discount to keep them too

Spare parts?

Offer them free to anyone who wants a BlackBerry and save the company a buck or two.

Maybe one of the repair companies needs spare parts. Sell them the whole lot in one deal if accounting allows it.

You could hook a chain to it and wear it as a necklace.

Yea we currently donate regular cell phones to charity - haven't donated a BlackBerry yet.

We provide the BlackBerrys for free to our employees, so they of course want the 8700 and could not care less for a free 7100 when the 8700 is free to them.

I'm in a simmilar situation at my place of work. I initially proposed selling stuff on eBay and then using the money to have a pizza party for all of our employees but they didn't got for it.

I then asked if I could create a paypal account and sell the items and then just keep the credit in the paypal account tied to our business bank account for future eBay parts purchases and our business office manager seemed to like the idea.

You'd probably need to work out some chain of accountability for the account but it's really just like you traded equipment you don't need for equipment you do need. They trust you not to walk out the door with the phones so they should trust you to get a fair price for them and reuse that money for things you need. If the Paypal account is created and maintained by your accounting dept. they would be the only ones who could withdraw the money and even then it would be deposited into a bank account that only the appropriate people have access to already.

I work for a very large corporation - PayPal would not be an "acceptable" solution.
It looks like we decided to just use the old 7100s on new hires and not give them a choice on a 8700.

We generally don't replace Blackberries unless one dies or ends up broken (which happens from time to time). The few fully functional trade-ins that we do end up with are mostly due to execs upgrading and those are kept as spares.

I am actually in the process of building the world's first "Blackberry House", made entirely of BB units. All donations welcome...
