Default Cell Towers vs. Satellite

Please Login to Remove!

I am trying to find out information on the following.

I heard that blackberries phone service work off satellites and not cell phone towers like regular cell phones do.

Want to find out if this is true ?

If it is would that make it then to be possible to make and receive calls at places like underground, basements, subways, etc.... <?>

Thanks for your help

They work on Cell towers like all Cell service. Satellite service phones use different frequencys and have to be in the open. they do not work in most buildings.

That may be, but Blackberrys get their service off of cell towers AND some get service over WiFi. Not satellites. Ever. And Satellite doesn't work in a basement - think about it.

Ever get GPS to work in a basement?

Your friend must be using WiFi, which many BBs support.

Does he sell phones?. Depending on service, most cell phones work in basements.
Satellite phones need to see the sky. direct line of sight.
