Default 8820 - Wifi w/no contract?

Please Login to Remove!

I know there have been previous threads like this, but I'd like to be as clear on it as I can before I dive in...

I'd like to buy an inexpensive 8820 (~$60 on eBay) for use on a trip to Europe. I want to be able to use WiFi hotspots, and buy a local SIM card for phone/text while traveling. If I get an 8820 and unlock it can I do all this? It's a quad-band GSM so should have no probs in Europe with a local carrier...

Also, is there a standalone GPS mapping app that I can install and use without using any cell network?

NOTE: I have no intention of signing up for an AT&T contract as their coverage where I live is bad (I use Verizon - but CDMA won't work over there).

Thanks for any help.

I don't know of any stand-alone GSP app that will work without a data plan.

You can use the 8820 (unlocked) in Europe with a pre-paid SIM card for phone and sms. I don't think you will get much use out of WiFi without a BlackBerry data plan on your accout. It may be possible to browse the web over WiFi on a third-party browser but you won't be able to download anything or stream anything.
