Question Why is the Blackberry GPS SatNav Software limited

Please Login to Remove!

Hello all

Just wondered of anyone could tell me why most of the available Blackberry sat nav programs are, in my opinion absolutely rubbish.

I've tried the Blackberry Maps, Google maps, Orange Maps & they all seem to use the internet connection for guidance, even when I have the GPS turned on.

Which usually results in no navigation & I have to resort to using my Nokia.

I still have a trusty old Nokia, which I have Garmin XT Mobile sat nav program installed & is far superior to anything for the Blackberry!

I've tried a Blackberry Bold 9700 - Garmin 2.2mb trial version & again it primarily uses the internet connection as opposed to the inbuilt GPS receiver.

If anyone can confirm that Garmin mobile XT with full map install will be out or is out & where to download from for the Blackberry.

I think the Blackberry is a great phone, but the lack of sat nav programs & compatibility & connection issues lets it down badly!

Most, if not all, BlackBerry GPS navigation applications download map data on the fly.
They aren't stored on the device itself.

I don't know of any GPS navigation apps that store maps to be used in an "offline mode".

First of all, BlackBerry Maps and Google Maps are NOT "satnav" applications.

What does this statement mean? "they all seem to use the internet connection for guidance, even when I have the GPS turned on."

Are you saying that the applications are using the network for the position information or something else?

The Garmin application is probably the best navigation application. Not sure what this means though. "it primarily uses the internet connection as opposed to the inbuilt GPS receiver"

Again, are you saying that about the position data or about the map data?

As indicated above, the applications do not "load a full set of maps". The map data is downloaded dynamically.

Arrow SOLVED - Why is the Blackberry GPS SatNav Software limited

Re: Motorcycle Mama

Cheers for your reply, but if you have a blackberry phone with either 'Google maps' or 'Blackberry maps' you should already know what I mean.

The Garmin Mobile XT program for the Nokia for example, comes with complete map that is loaded into phone on SD card & works offline, using the phones internal GPS chip.

If there is such a version of Garmin XT mobile for the blackberry I look forward to using it in the future as opposed to the ones mentioned above in the 1st paragraph.

Topic ended as far as I'm concerned.

The BlackBerry (all of them, which have GPS) use the built-in GPS, and can even use the GPS to locate your GPS coordinates with no Data Plan, or even without a SIM inserted in the device.

To get your mapping, you'll need a data plan, regardless.
