Default Which BB?

Please Login to Remove!

Sorry, this is one of those mundane general questions--I have an old Curve 8310 from work which I use primarily for email.

Been bitten and now want to replace my crap LG personal cell. While I do like most things Apple and only buy MAC computers I'm not too jazzed by iPhone.
So, which BlackBerry.

Have opportunity to buy a used but in excellent condition Bold 9000, I quite like this phone, friend has one. Considering the new Bold 9780, perhaps Torch.

Call quality is imperative, I have no land line. I like music with me, I text to a degree (hence a real keyboard, do not like virtual) and would like a decent camera--that is the drawback to the 9000, mediocre cam.

Weigh in if you have an opinion--used 9000 (and is there something I should look for in a used 9000, any weakness?) or just shell out for new 9780 with updated OS? Thoughts on Torch?

Or other??

Thanks v much

First , welcome to the Forums.

The first consideration is the area you plan on using your BB and is the carrier service is good and solid especially if you plan on not having a xxx8220;landlinexxx8221;. I wonxxx8217;t go into the negatives on not having a landline.
Buying used is always a challenge if the seller is unknown so be careful. What I would do is go to your carrier or a carrier who sells the BB you like and check it out. Other than the Torch which has a touch screen, the others are generally the same if a new model.

Ditto. First consideration is the carrier you will use. My advice is go into a store and play with the devices. If you have friends using blackberry, talk to them. Go to blackberry.com or the carrier's web site and read the specs and use the compare device function on the web site.

Also see blackberryfaq.com and find the article on buying through ebay. It applies to buying used, not just ebay.

If you are using Rogers, then you need a GSM device. The 9000, 9780 and 9800 are the correct models.

9000 is a bit older. Very solid. Runs OS 4.6 but there is an upgrade to 5.0. Next is the Torch. Released in August. OS 6. Has a touchscreen, so if you don't like them, might not be the device for you. The 9780 is the newest GSM out there. Also runs OS 6.

My advice on the newer ones would be to go to either your carrier's website or to RIM's and compare the specs to see which you like. Then go to a phone store and "play" with them for a bit. hen pick one and take it for a test drive. Most carriers will let you return it after 15 to 30 days, but check with your carrier first to make sure.

Before you buy a used BB, whether from eBay or elsewhere, make sure you read this: Buying a BlackBerry off eBay - BlackBerryFAQ

I am planning to get a new blackberry also, can you guys tell me a little more about this windows operating system 5 and 6? what is a GMS?
I realize there is a Tour, Bold, Curve and Style that I would be interested in getting (Torch seems too expensive, want a physical keyboard (not storm), and a full qwerty (not pearl).
what exactly differentiates between the 4 that I have listed?

I see a lot of people with the bold, but besides the wOS 6, how is the UI compared to the tour and curve? calendar, screen layout (any software advantage in usability)?

The style has a wOS 6 as well, then what's so bad about it?

hope i'm not diverting the discussion too far along...

It is not Windows.
Its RIM's OS.
Do you mean GSM? That is a network type. I.e. AT&T are GSM, Sprint are CDMA.
A GSM phone will not work on a CDMA network. A CDMA phone won't work on a GSM network.
Phones with CDMA & GSM will work on a GSM network but only with EDGE not 3G data.

Thanks all for your input. I do have Rogers so GSM--narrowed to Bold 9000 (I like the look) and have a line on a Curve 8900 great price, very gently used, better camera.

Thinking I'll pick up one of those for a year or so then upgrade. Decided against Torch, just not a touch screen fan.

Thanks again

Cheers
