Default Setting up gmail Sync for a new user

Please Login to Remove!

I have a new Bold 9780. No experience with Blackberries at all.

I've just set it up to connect with my gmail account. That seems to work, because when I send a new message to myself, it promptly shows up on the Blackberry.

I read a bit about gmail 2-way sync with Blackberry, and enhanced gmail plugins as well as the automatic gmail setup feature with blackberry mail. For a complete newbie these weren't terribly clear and I can't tell if these are the same thing or not, so any advice about this would be welcome too.

However, my main query is that none of the pre-existing messages in my gmail inbox get sent to to the blackberry. Anyone know how to make that happen?

You would have to resend each to yourself. Prior messages are not sent to your BB.

Thanks a lot!

Gmail seems to be doing what I need in terms of syncing etc so all is well.

You can also set it up so it syncs your calendar and contacts. Just check those options in your Gmail screen on BIS.

BlackBerrys only sync new mail, unless you're doing a restore on BES.

So to get those old emails sent like new ones you need to fool the RIM email servers into thinking they're new. I have done this with Apple's MobileMe mail and it works. Unfortunately you can't rely on this little trick to work with every email provider. It's on a case-by-case basis and seems pretty random as far as with whom it will work. You also have to do this one email message at a time.

Here's what I do:

1. Make sure the email is marked as opened or read.
2. Move the email you want to get sent to your BB into the trash.
3. Go into the trash and now mark the email unread.
4. Move the email into your inbox, keeping it's status as unread.

It works almost instantly most of the time, but now and then it can take about 10 minutes to be picked up by RIM and sent to your handheld.
