I have installed bbnotepad on this device and I tried to open a file on the media card with it (unhelpfully called doc). After deleting this file with bb desktop manager, the phone is still trying to open it (before deleting it was 0 bytes in size). I'm pretty sure I can terminate the process by pulling the battery, but is there a less drastic method?

A battery pull isn't a drastic method. Its the first thing to do when your blackberry is giving you problems.

Battery pull is probably the best method. Then delete the app. Reinstall if you really want it.

Thanks, Draven and Dubdub. So the batt pull is BB's Ctl-Alt-Del? I am using ver. 4.6.0.266 (Platform 4.0.0.223) and no data plan. Would an os upgrade allow a process to be unconditionally aborted? The app is for text only files bigger than Memo will allow and it has always worked before. How can data (0 bytes long) corrupt the app?

Depends on the device and OS that the app supports. You need to contact the developer with that question.
