I own a BB9700. I live in the far east currently, and so it's hard to get a data plan here.

My requests might be unique, and may cause some people to raise their eyebrows:

I would like to have email capabilities, but no internet (or at least reduced one). I want my BB to be a working device, not something for fun (yes, I regard the internet as mainly an entertaining thing). My concern is not to waste too much time surfing the internet, since this can become a severe problem for me. That's why I'm not really into the service plan (which will make me pay a lot of money for something that I actually try to avoid!).

My questions are as follows:

1. Is there a way to get email capabilities without a service plan?

2. Is there a way to get email capabilities (with or without a service plan) but with no third generation (3G) internet browsing (currently I have the possibility to surf the web from my prepaid sim card---which is very slow, and so it's good for me!) ?

3. Is there a way to uninstall the browser application from my BB (Bold9700) ?

No, you need a service plan in order to use e-mail properly, but you do not need 3G. It will work on EDGE or GPRS.

1. No, you don't ask for it. You can change your device's settings to only work on 2G, but there is honestly no reason to do that.

2. You should be uninstall it in Desktop Manager.

1. Your BlackBerry will automatically use the best data connection available. No choosing on your part.

GPRS < EDGE < 3G.

But you need a BlackBerry data plan to use email. If you can't get one you might be better served with a Nokia E-series phone or something like it.

Can you elaborate more on how to uninstall the browser from DM?

On the 9700 run Options, select Mobile Network, scroll down to Network Mode and set it to 2G. That will limit your data connection to EDGE or lower (depending on service availability).

If you have the OS package that matches what you are running on your device loaded on your PC, running the DM and selecting Applicatin Loader, and starting Add/Remove programs gives you the option to select what OS components are loaded on the device. In OS 5.0.0 (at least) the browser is required so I don't think you will be able to remove it.

No, you cannot use WAP without third-party software.
