Default Filtering in the UAE

Please Login to Remove!

I am new in Dubai and would like to subscribe to Blackberry service but heard that it is filtered. Can you advise me which of the two providers (Etisalat or du) filters Internet? Thanks. Lamis

The government mandates it so the answer is all of them. you can check with friends to see how much.

I can confirm that they both do. ALL Internet, mobile or terrestrial, is filtered by the Government of the UAE.

Thank you. I guess it does not matter then which service provider I should use.

I wonder if RIM knows about this and if they are ok with that (violation of Western values?). Or maybe they are the one implementing filtering on behalf of the UAE government.

Rim does not directly send data to a Blackberry so because it must involve a carrier to "forward" all data to the user, its easy to block and control various items.
Rim does know of the restrictions.

BlackBerry used to be the only devices that weren't filtered, but late last year the UAE Government (along with the KSA, Kuwait, India and other countries) threatened to ban BlackBerry if RIM did not allow them to inject their country's filtering process.

My understanding is that Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman do not filter Blackberry. Can users in these countries please confirm, please? Thanks

Just because I'm curious, why does it matter? You live in the UAE, not Qatar, Kuwait, or Oman.

Just for comparison purposes. UAE has been shocking me. It is so liberal in the streets yet conservative online. Kuwait for example is far more conservative yet they don't seem to worry about filtering, or so I understand. This is intriguing.

Gotcha. As a person who spends a decent amount of time in DXB, I'd have to agree.
