Default USA AT&T Blackberry traveling in China

Please Login to Remove!

I might be going to China, I will be taking my AT&T 9700 with me. Has anyone done that in the past? Any pointers? Any limitations? I am planning to turn on international data but won't be using my phone for voice to avoid a huge bill. Does BBM work? Can I send pictures via BBM? How about facebook, google, etc.. Or any sites that are blocked from computers, can they be accessed on Blackberry?

How about Hong Kong, is that different or whatever is in China applies to HKG?

Thanks!

To be safe I would call the carrier to see how much you will pay for service. Calls are expensive as you state but data charges can also add up. You might check into a pre paid SIM.

If you have the proper roaming plan the BlackBerry will work fine in Asia. I've been to Hong Kong several times with 9000/9700.

Keep in mind of 1 thing. BlackBerry data plan does not cover web browsing. For example I have AT&T Unlimited International roaming which covers me for BES/BIS e-mail and BBM but I get charged for web browsing.

AT&T website is not working, does anyone have any idea when it will get back online?
Thanks for the pointer on the web browsing. I will try to limit my browsing to my laptop then.

tsac, I wouldn't really consider getting a prepaid SIM since I need to get my e-mails and access exchange on my phone, and having BBM would be great so I would barely have to make calls, especially to my wife back home. If sending pictures over BBM works, that will be just fine.

Still down but it should be up by tomorrow. You can call customer service but I doubt you will get the answers you need.

Wireless: 1-800-331-0500 or 611 from your wireless phone

Thanks, it is up today and I'm shocked to see they charge $60 for 50MB of data.
My last year's monthly data usage is 90 to 125 MB, and during last month it was 400MB due to radio streaming. So I consider my daily usage 3-5MB (wow, with all those e-mails).

Voice? Forget about it. $2/minute

Data adds up fast when your having fun. If you need work emails not much you can do except pay the bill. I know some of the cost is due to the lack of roaming aggrements being available at a reasonable price.

Yep, knowing this, I decided that I would limit my picture over BBM and try to get skype running over there for video chats.

You do realize there are restrictions in China on some internet use.
I would check and see what you can and cannot do or you may be unhappy.

Good Luck

Something I will have to live with for the period I stay there. I hope BBF works, although I will really miss Google Reader (the only google application that I love and use every day, next to maps)

Strange. I've had that plan for years and have never been charged for browsing. Are you talking about the $65/month plan. Mine is unlimited data both US and international. I've never had a surprise bill.

Those plans aren't available to new users on ATT. For new users, you can just bend over and take it up the rear if you want to travel and use your phone.

Err, $50 for 125MB for the month beats $20 for 1MB pay-per-use any day.

Yup. I am now having fun with ATT on grandfathering my plan to my new 9810. I think they will get it done (insist on talking to international tech support if you try this) but the 3G-->4G transition is confusing them.

Meanwhile I'm looking at the international data plans and the $50/month plan which you can turn on/off at will might save me some money. I like the unlimited plan because I don't have to worry when I'm on travel, as I am many times a year.

Yeah, the unlimited is actually still available if your company has an enterprise plan with AT&T, but they have to add it to your line for a whole year, which is not that cost effective unless you're out all the time and doing more than just e-mail. Also, since BlackBerry devices compress the data they send and receive and WiFi is so readily available in the First and Second World, there is really no reason one should need more than 100MB if e-mail and BBM are your main transmissions.

I'd recommend getting a SIM card in China. I believe that China Unicom might be the one with a compatible network but you can try China Mobile the market leader as well.

Reason? Roaming is EXPENSIVE. I easily spent over 200 on phone calls when i was in hongkong.

My blackberry didn't work in China.

I bought a cheap nokia and a phone card which was the better way for me.

Voice is a different matter. For voice I have a CSL sim from Hong Kong that lives an a Moto V400. Elsewhere I skype.
