If the new device is a BlackBerry, use the switch device wizard in Desktop Manager.

If not a BlackBerry, my recommendation would be to at least sync contacts, calendar, tasks, and notepad with something (Outlook, Google, ...). I don't have any advice for messages that are on the BlackBerry and nowhere else. Any media or document files in main memory can be moved to a media card, which is where they should be anyway.

it will be a blackberry, but i wont have both devices when transferring - basically mine is broken and im being sent a replacement but i have to exchange the old broken one on the spot for the new one, so wont ave them both..

but can i do the device wizard thing to take a FULL COPY of ALL my current bb device, and LATER ON transfer ALL those files to the new bb device?

thanks again,

Just do a full backup using Desktop Manager. To be safe, copy the backup to a thumbdrive or something, just in case. If you have two computers, say a desktop and a laptop, do a backup on each one. (I believe in being as careful as you can.)

Do the backup as late as you can before the exchange, then turn data off. Do a full restore to the new BlackBerry and then turn data on.

Keep in mind that any messages accidently downloaded on the new BlackBerry will be overwritten when you do the restore.

One last thought. A full backup will not backup third-party apps. If you have any paid apps or just any aftermarket apps that can't be downloaded again, look at BBSAK. There is also a guide a blackberryfaq.com. I've never done it, but help should be easy enogh to find with a search.

Try this. Start the switch device wizard with the old BB and when it prompts you to connect the new one, head to wherever you need to go to get the new one. Once you get back connect the new one and you're all set. Just hope you don't have a power outage while you're gone.
