OS 7 is simply the next version of OS 6. RIM was going to use "7" for QNX but decided to push up the nomenclature for the next revision of 6. And there is no telling how soon we'll see actual QNX-based BlackBerrys.

I can't get rid of my 9300 fast enough and refuse to get a 9780 or 9800 when I know there's the 9900 coming out. Ill get an OS 7 device because there will be nothing better available for Blackberry on release. That said, RIM needs to hurry up and revamp their line up and starting pumping out dual core smartphones. I've been considering android lately.

I don't believe that OS7 sales will be as good as RIM would want, and that may translate into another bad quarterly call, but I don't believe that OS7 sales will be horrible either. Most people that use smartphones/tablets/computers don't post in forums, and most people won't realize (or possibly care) that QNX phones are just around the corner.

Would the IT department of a Global 500 replace thousands of laptops knowing full well, they will not support the next version of Windows due out over the next year? I doubt it very much. Nor would I expect IT purchasing areas to replace BB units with OS7 over the next year either. RIM will have to make do with individuals and (maybe) SMBs for sales.

Your argument makes no sense to me as I wouldn't expect massive IT departments to be trying to keep up with the latest BlackBerry devices regardless of the OS7 to QNX transition. In other words, I fully expect there are a large number of corporate users on older devices with no IT plans to move to anything newer any time soon, and therefore the EOL for the traditional BBOS isn't really a deciding factor..

QNX is late to hit the market but from what we have experienced from RIM lag it would probably be out by end of next year hence reason to update to OS7.
I hope Im wrong and they pull QNX sooner.

Not so much to keep up, but as the company owned devices come for renewal/replacement they will postpone any upgrade and wait for QNX based devices. I'm sure there are companies that never/rarely upgrade their devices, but there are many that do on 24 month replacement cycles.

Companies either replace when broken or replace on a schedule.

Either way, when a device comes up for renewal, it gets replaced.

If I have a budget to replace x number of devices this year, I have to use it this year. It is very rare that capex can be moved from year to year. Certainly not because of a potential software upgrade.

Also realize that in large IT shops, OS upgrade on existing devices does not happen. IT admins have better things to do than cycle phones in to update the OS. So if the phone i buy today won't run the new OS halfway through it's life, who cares.

I'll get a 9900 as soon as feasible for me...it's time for an upgrade. We can be pretty sure that the 9900 will be available in a few months. When will the QNX phones come along? End of 2011? In a year? Two? Who the heck knows...? I see no reason to assume that they are 'just around the corner' or that the first production will be worth having.
