Using Blackberries in Japan?

Howdy, I'm new to this forum, so I hope this is the right place to ask this (my first post, please be gentle, etc.)

I'm in the military, currently stationed in Korea. I have an old Verizon Blackberry that I was rather fond of (particularly for email and the organizer), but which cost me an arm and a leg to use with Verizon, and as far as I know, wouldn't work anywhere else. I've been using a pre-paid phone and an iPod for my communication needs, and I have to say the iPod's email and calendar just aren't replacements for my old crackberry.

Is it possible to get a blackberry in Japan? Is it overly expensive? Is it possible to buy one of the worldwide phones (such as one of the Bold models) and use it with a prepaid card in Japan for voice and text and use the wifi for the data stuff? Just figuring out options right now before I head over.

Welcome to the forums and thanks for the service in the military.

A lot of people use a BB in Japan but if your going to be there only for a short while you might consider either a used BB or one that can be carried back home to be used again. Depending on the carrier you might be able to get a deal because you in the military.

Also get it unlocked.

Japan's networks, as are Korea's, seem to be coming around or maybe he devices just include those frequencies these days. Not sure which. Most of the newer models will work, but it really depends on where you are and what carrier. Many of the older models will not.

My advice would be to check it out with people stationed where you will be. I was in Japan and the Far East way before the cell phone was "invented", so can't really help. If you are going to be there for a couple years, you might consider getting one from a Japanese carrier via the base exchange service.

Might try using our SEARCH feature and search on "Japan" and see what you find.

I would definitely take Dubdub's advice and go to the mobile shop in the Exchange as the folks working there will know how to work through the all of the contract mumbo jumbo. All of the newer UMTS devices have the correct band (UMTS 2100) for Japanese and Korean 3.5G service, and DoCoMo is the only carrier that has ever sold BlackBerry service in Japan.

Here is their page for the 9780, but you can use any of the newer UMTS ones like the 9810, 9900, or 9860. They simply don't customise all of the models for the Japanese language:
BlackBerryョ Bold(TM) 9780 | 製品 | NTTドコモ

Hope this helps, thanks for your service, and enjoy Japan!
