I have backed up my BB. Is it possible to take the Contacts and save them as an Excel Spreadsheet

I don't thik you can from the backup file directly but I think there is an option to download them as a CSV File when connected to your BB. I think it's in the advanced option of DM. Saw the discussed a while back. You might triy searching for".CSV".

The advanced DM does not allow me to save the back up as anything but a .ipd file. Does anyone know how to convert it to Excel or word or anything else

no, there is no known method to do this. IPD files only readable in blackberries directly..

What exactly do you want to do? The DM has the capability to sync directly with Outlook. If you want an duplicate of your BB, and don't want to sync to your current Outlook profile, try creating a new empty outlook profile and sync to that.
Then in Outlook you can export to a csv file I believe.
