Default So my 9800 Torch almost set me on fire...

Please Login to Remove!

Earlier that day, I noticed that the battery on my torch was dying really fast. I could have sworn I had at least 50% a few minutes ago... but now its 5%? Must be some power-intensive app I have running.

Then later I go to take the phone out of my pocket and I get a very nasty burn on my hand. There is a metal disc I have fixed to the back of the blackberry to attach a cable-less charging pad, so I probably wouldn't have gotten burned if it weren't for that, but still. My F-S1 battery had shorted, and gotten very very hot.

There was no thermal fuse or short-circuit-prevention tech in the battery at all. Thermal fuses aren't big or expensive, and my phone could have easily detected that something was wrong when it used up about 4 watts in 2 minutes. Whats the deal, RIM?

Were you using a genuine OEM battery? I haven't heard of any issues with any type of Powermat charging system.

Yep, it says blackberry on the front and its got the shiny blackberry logo hologram sticker on the back. BTW I would like to point out I didn't actually have the powermat system attached at the time, only a small quarter-sized metal disc affixed with double-sided tape to the outside of the plastic battery/card compartment cover., used so that the powermat device can attach by magnet. But the device itself plugs into the USB port to send power from the mat, and at the time, I didnt have it connected because it hasn't been working for a while. I just left the metal disc attached in case I could fix it later.

Well yeah obviously, that was more meant to be imagined being spoken while I faced the sky. Or perhaps being shouted out my window.

Is this the same BlackBerry where the buttons don't work anymore?

Hi! Yup. Switched the battery out with a new one and the new battery appears to be working fine in my 9800. Also, put the "defective" battery in a friend's 9800 and it appears to be working fine in their phone too.

I think my phone fried my battery?

If your battery was fried, not only would it not work in a different device, the device that fried it would be a melted slab of metal and plastic. ALL Li-cell batteries have multiple safety features in them to prevent catistophic failure. Otherwise, they wouldn't work.

ok NEARLY fried my battery. I think if it weren't for the fact that it was in my pocket so I quickly knew when something is wrong, it would have melted. If I had left that battery in there for a few more minutes I'm sure of it.

ok, so what about it being used in another device? If the battery was blown, then it shouldn't work in another phone.

I would also bring it in to be looked at. Hope you have extended insurance. Bring the device to Bell or a third party cell phone repair shop and then contact Bell. They should be made aware in case the problem is more widespread (though I tend to think it is not).

we have over 30 9800s here and never saw this on them or the 100s of other BlackBerry devices I have seen at the office.

Lithium batteries have protection in them, maybe it got hot from being in an area with weak signal, mine will do it at a few friends houses as it searches for a signal.

once a OS 5 app was installed on an OS6 devie and CPU spiked to 99% causing it to heat up a bit but not enough to burn me.
