Default Blackberry with built in GPS hardware

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,
My car GPS unit died and I want to finally upgrade my Blackberry 8707 to a newer model.

I don't care if itís an old model; it just has to have built in GPS hardware (meaning it does not work off mobile network data towers).

I am really looking for an older model which I can find on ebay cheapish.

Can anyone suggest a model?

Before you buy a used BB from any source, you need to read this: Buying a BlackBerry off eBay - BlackBerryFAQ

And once you find one you like, check the specs and see if it has GPS. Keep in mind that you will need a BB dataplan to get maps and there are no free map apps that give auto reroute and turn by turn commands.

You will probably be happier with a portable GPS device rather than a cell phone with GPS.

And, the 8707 does not have GPS.

As far as GPS apps go, I recommend Telenav. I've used it for years without any issues. Worth the cost of the app.

If in the USA or Canada, BlackBerry Traffic does give turn based audio navigation for free with a BB dataplan. no map is shown though.

Traffic will also automatically reroute. And I think it's actually a pretty good app. If the op would reconsider requirements, it is well worth a try. But it does sound like user wants a dedicated GPS unit.

The lowest cost is simply a new portable GPS, Garmin etc.

Do these GPS apps show the speed I'm going? Considering they are running off the cell phone data network and not the GPS satellite system?

Yes, they do show your speed. But a clarification. The BlackBerry devices with gps capability do have gps chips and do use the satellites. The apps download maps via the network as you move, and some devices may rely on the network for some of the number crunching instead of the device having to do it.
