1 Attachment(s)
Hi,

I have a problem with blackberries leaving IMAP active processes open on my cpanel. How can i change the configuration of a BB so it wont leave a IMAP process open forever on the hosting...

thanks

Its RIM servers keeping it open not the device itself.

RIM does push email so it always needs to be connected.

Hi is there a way to configure a BB so it wont to use the rim servers and just get the mail via Pop directly from the server?

Thanks!

current phones are unable to access email by POP

They use RIMs NOC to get emails which are pushed to device in a compressed manner.

Have users config their BIS account to use POP if need be

Its no worse that a person leaving outlook on all the time.

The other way is to configure your IMAP server to not support the IMAP IDLE command.

I have to ask though, is having the ports open really an issue? The performance overhead that will be required to set up and take down a connection every 15 minutes for each client to check for mail compared with an established but idle connection may not be as much as you think.

i know its not using much performance. its just on our server there is a max of 25 processes. If i go over that my website will give a internal error 500.

I need to force the blackberry to retreive the mail using pop3 to avoid that. So how can i setup the blackberries to do this?

you can block IMAP ports from the BIS servers with a firewall, that will aggravate user though

In that case, forcing the BIS to log in each time won't necessarily solve your problem. There is no guarantee that the BIS won't occasionally have one connection for each of your users open at the same time, either IMAP or POP3. All you will be doing is making a nice deterministic problem, into a non-deterministic one that depends on the behaviour of another server that is out of your control. The best solution in this case would be to size your server to your user base.
