Is it possible? Perhaps.

Would I believe someone if they told me they didn't see the message when my BlackBerry showed it was read? I would suggest someone else had access to the BlackBerry and opened and then deleted the message. That, or the person somehow messed up, wasn't paying attention, or not telling the truth.

If your friend clicked on the message, then it would show up as R or read on your device. So the person may not be telling the truth. If your friend did not click on the message then it would not have shown up as R on your phone
