Right, I'm new here and I'm here because I can't work out this gift of my sons.
Its a 9320 and brand new. We've worked out everything else apart from this adding a bbm contact trouble.

I can get to the screen where it says, system messages, contacts,bbm groups.
And click on contacts, then get a drop down saying 'invite to bbm', is that correct or am I missing something please ?

Yep. That's the idea. You can imput an email address or PIN for the person. They, of course, must also have BBM. I would use PIN versus email for the invite (more reliable).

Also, FYI just in case: You must have the BlackBerry data service on the line the BlackBerry is using, the BlackBerry must be associated with the data plan, and the device must have received the service books.
