I did a security wipe on my BB 8520. Before doing so I did a general back up assuming that the photos would have also backed up. However on restoring the phone with the back up, I noticed that the photos were missing. Is there a way to retrieve the lost photographs.

Nope. If you didn't specifically back them up, then they are gone (unless they were on the Media Card).
