How do you know what your PIN is? I am not familiar with the BB messenger. How does it work?

My PIN was under the battery which is where i guess a lot of them are. I have never used the messenger since i dont know anyone else with a blackberry, that is why i am hoping to get a few contacts off here and give it a shot.
