The beginning of the thread seems to suggest SMS but this is what I extracted from the RIM web page:

"BlackBerry data service with a US- or Canadian-based wireless Service Provider (Google Talk for BlackBerry devices will be available to other BlackBerry subscribers soon! xxx8212; Check back here for updates) "
Yes, it uses data not SMS.

Question

Ok someone answer me this... Why the heck do we need all these chat clients!! For blackberry to blackberry we have BBmessenger, for AIM we have ramble and the list goes on. I could see Google talk being great if it chatted with AIM, Yahoo, ICQ etc. but it only talks to google, what about the masses that don't have google talk that I can't chat too and can't convince to get it! I just want 1 program that does it all :( Or am I missing something the larger picture here?

Well, for one thing, a lot have gmail accounts now. When browsing your gmail account on a standard browser, Gtalk is activated automatically -- no need for extra software to be installed. I guess in the near future, a lot will be chatting via Gtalk.

Actually you can setup Google Talk to be a universal client, and talk to MSN, AIM, ICQ and Yahoo all at once from the same interface. I wrote down the steps to do just that at http://francks.blogspot.com/2006/02/...eb-client.html. Once it's done your gtalk client on the Blackberry will be able to replace all those universal IM clients and connect to all possible buddies....

I could not test because I live in the UK :( and even though I was able to download the client by pointing my proxy to a box in the US, I get an error that some service books are unavailable still. Any help on that would be appreciated ;)

Wow, I think this might actually work! If I had time I would do it right now but no time to do all the reading and setting up :(

Can you help out the few of us not so literate at this by posting clear step by step instryctions to do this, I tried to do this and could not follow the instructions so I did not attempt it. It certainly would be great to have everything in one program.

I am trying to grasp this? Are you saying I can use Gtalk on the BB to allow me to chat with someone on YAHOO?

The beauty of this is that it allows those without full-MDS (eg. Bell Mobility and Telus users) to have a fully functional (and free!) mutli-service IM client without BES....brilliant!

Yes...If you have the time and knowhow to get it working...

If the user that got this working can write a step by step, that would help a lot of people here, and would be a great addition to the community

I noticed that when Auto On/Off is enabled, you have to re-sign in when the BB turns back on unlike BB messenger. Any way around this?

You do not need a Google Talk app to work with your Mac. The reason is that you can setup iChat to use with the Google Talk servers. The directions are on the Google Talk page. With iChat you can be logged into AIM and Google Talk at the same time.
