Hi all,

I have a customer who used to own a BlackBerry. While she owned it, she made a backup to an IPD file.

She has now sent this file to me, and asked that I try and get all the e-mail in it into an Outlook PST so she can peruse it on her PC.

It looks like she was set up through a BES server, with an Exchange account when she was using her BB.

I have access to a spare 7880, as well as a BES and Exchange server, but would really like to avoid using the BES/Exchange servers so as not to pester our internal network administrator.

Can I simply restore the IPD file into my spare BB, then create a blank MAPI profile to sync that data into Outlook? Is there a better solution?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

You can skip the whole MAPI part, use the spare BB and restore it with the .ipd file, install the desktop manager on your comp, then sync the BB with Outlook and you done.

I did that, however it only pulled in contacts and notes. Nothing from inbox. Calendar is empty.

I now notice on the BB when I do "View folders", I've now got "Mailbox - Jeff Cullen" and "Mailbox - (Cilent's name)". Mine has my stuff in it, and hers isn't synchronizing into my outlook.

In desktop manager, go to backup ==> advanced ==> and open the file. How many messages do you see inthe file? It may be she didn't back up the messages.

They're there. I can view them on the BB itself.

Then click on Intellisync in desktop manager and make sure reconsile messages is checked.

"Reconcile messages" is certainly checked.

I feel like it's some kind of mailbox name or id problem like one of those things in Windows networks where you can have two users with identical names, but different UIDs, thus different profiles...

I have done this many times, should work. The steps are:

-Restore IPD to Blackberry
-Go to desktop manager - Intellisync.
-Click on <Configure PIM>
-Select whatever you want to synchronize. Here you also need to ensure that it's pointing to your outlook files. (I use Lotus Notes and it's fairly easy)
-Make sure that Address book and Calendar are checked.
-Click <Synchronize Now>. Intellisync will now synchronize and show a report at the end.

I don't think that you can restore Email messages this way as the user accounts are not the same. (But let me know if you get that to work)

NOTE: I could be completely off base here, but consider this...

You may be chasing your tail on this one. Intellisync doesn't handle email reconciliation, or at least doesn't SYNC. Regardless of how it's set up, it's kind of a one way sync. Moves and Deletes might replicate back to Outlook, but in six years I've never seen Desktop Manager put email INTO Outlook!

I think the only way you MIGHT be able to deal with this is to actually set up the spare Blackberry, with an email account on Exchange and a BES account, restore the email to the BB, and then FORWARD each message individually.

OR

Restore the backup to the Blackberry, and then copy the entire contents of messages and paste them into Notes/Memo Pad, then sync.

REMEMBER ALSO, large messages are likely to be truncated, and there's no way to retrieve the rest of the message (you can't MORE!).

I can understand why a user might think this shouldn't be such a problem, however the fact is that it's REALLY difficult. Frankly, I would restore the messages to the spare Berry, give it to the user, and tell her to get someone to transcribe the needed messages. That's significantly easier than trying to get them into a PST!
