Default What non business uses do you have for your BB? - 03-29-2006, 07:54 PM

I am on the verge of purchasing a 7520. I don't really need one. I just want one! What uses does it have that are not geared towards a business user?

Thanks!
Meg

It glows at night. Very useful in a dark room.

Backlit makes for a great flash light when I get home late and can't see the key hole on the front door!

Web browsing is the one that interests me the most. When you go to the store to look at them no one ever has a working model. I want to know how much of a pain it is to view the pages and navigate etc.

You mean by spending too much money or ignoring the spouse to play on the new toy? I already do that on the computer. At least on the BB I could be in the same room with him.

Most of the common ones have been hit on already:
  • flashlight (damn I love that bright backlight!)
  • alarm clock
  • IM in your pocket (friends and family can MSN me anywhere ... is this good? i'm not sure yet ...)
  • trivia/directions/movie times/definitions (just generally having knowledge at your fingertips)
  • pocket photo album
  • bordom releif (with games, newsfeeds, Web browsing ...)
  • Weblog posting whenever and wherever there's somthing to report
  • one of the strongest cellphone vibrators ...
  • picking up phone numbers/email address/IM handles
  • looking like a big-wig

It's already been mentioned, really but web browsing is very useful for checking traffic and weather.

Google Local is pretty nice on an 8700.

Oddly enough, when I first got a Blackberry years ago I thought the alarm clock was the dumbest feature but I actually use it all the time when traveling since I reliably know how to set it.

My SO and I PIN and use Blackberry IM quite a bit.

I second this ... Even better idea buy her one and PIN each other. I feel closer knowing there is always a wireless link.

All the points that make it a good business device also make it a good personal device with BES.

Its having outlook in your pocket. Plus all the additional points mentioned above (web, IM)

One I have not yet seen on here is using it to take sermon notes during church on Sunday, which is one of the things I use it for.

On a serious note, I think everyone uses their blackberry for different reasons. I know that I use the piss out of mine for "memory" reasons, just like Mark Rejhon uses his for communication (and other uses I am sure). About 2 or 3 years ago I had a bad car accident and hit my head on the driver side window and blacked out for a little. I was able to drive the car away to a safer location (no other cars were involved) and call for help. I refused to go to the hospital to be checked out or to stay at home and relax. I went out with my friends. All of the sudden I started seeing double and everything slowed way down. I eventually got taken the the ER and they told me that I had suffered a major concussion. For the next couple of days my memory was crap. I couldnt remember what I had just said to someone a couple of mins ago and a patch of hair where i hit my head fell out. I still suffer from this, but not nearly as bad. I did exercises every day to improve my memory, but I still forget a lot. So my blackberry is my memory. I put all the things in there that I dont want to forget. I am proud to say that my memory is back to about 85% of what it was before the accident. These are great devices and I am thankful to be in a good enough of a financial position to afford a compact device as this ( I could have to use a daytimer).

#1: BIRTHDAYS/ANNIVERSARIES/IMPORTANT DATES: I suck at recalling these; the BB helps me to look good in this regard.

#2: ALARM CLOCK: Its all I use--no concerns with power outages, and I like the snooze function. With my old alarm clock, I'd often forget to turn it off for weekends, and back on for Monday morning. This is not an issue with the Blackberry...as you can set it to not function on weekends...

#3: SMS/EMAIL: I do a signfiicant amount of personal stuff.

#4: FLASHLIGHT: Surprisingly, BB's are exceptionally handy in this regard.

#5: PASSWORDS: The password keeper has been a lifesaver many times.

A buddy of mine says that his Blackberry is indispensible for having affairs on his wife. He'd never manage it otherwise....LOL

It's a pain - but not a serious one. You get used to it and it does work. Just an awful lot of clicking...

I agree it's not convienient but I've found the BB browser in the 4.x series to be the most ~compatible~ browser on mobile devices I've tried. Even Windows Mobile devices seem to trigger some error or odd rendering bug more often than my BB does. And the Windows Mobile devices I've tried have been bulkier to get the 'good' rendering/screen anyway. Just my $0.02, exchange rates may vary. -Pk

I use mine for everything as well. I am happy to hear you are ok Corey and I can attest to the use of a BB for something like this. I have always had problems with math and organization. I hated trying to use a regular calculator and went through pocket organizers like crazy. I use the crap outta my BB calculator, calendar, notes and tasks. And it will be going back to college with me next semester as a notetaker if I can ever get hold to a Bluetooth keyboard I can download drivers online for (my external cd-dvd rom drive is a PITA to load software with). It's good to see that a BlackBerry can help those of us who disabilities.

I use mine for SMS, WAP and some web browsing, phone calls, calendar, address book, and some email reading. There are many devices that can do all that stuff, but so far my 8700g has been the best at doing all of that stuff in one device.

I forgot about the calculator. In addition to storing my grocery list on the BB (as a memo) I also use the calculator to add up my groceries as I go along. more often than not, I end up accidentally clearing the running total prior to finishing my shopping, but at least I have an idea of how much the damages are. Although lately I've been rounding up the running total to the next $0.50 and keep the total in my head.

I only wish it had a LOG button, or at least a LN button (LN 314 /LN 10 = LOG 314, I believe).

I use my personal BB for many of the reasons mentioned above. The web browser -- even with EDGE -- is slow and not very satisfying except fro Google Maps, CNN mobile and International Herald Tribune. What I like most about it is that it has virtually taken the place of my laptop when I travel. I can check my email and get basic news on the web browser. I may not even replace the laptop I have when it goes or becomes extinct. It is not about need but convenience. I don't have to come home to a mountain of email.
