Question Blackberrys or Blackberries

Please Login to Remove!

Someone in my organization is documenting our Blackberry policies, and wanted to know the correct way to reference Blackberry in the plural. From an English standpoint, it seems it should be "Blackberries." But a lot of news reports use "Blackberrys." What's the consensus? Has anyone seen how it is used in official documentation from RIM?

They pretty much use the moniker "BlackBerry devices". Maybe that's your safest bet. But my hunch would be "BlackBerrys" because in this case, BlackBerry is a proper name and the spelling of proper names generally isn't affected by pluralization. Then again, I have two degrees in conducting, not in English, so I could easily be wrong.

"I'm 100% convinced I'm right, and I'm 100% convinced I could be wrong."

"blackberrys" or formally, "BlackBerrys"

it is a registered trademark, so i believe that simple pluralization is acceptable, but printing an "ies" variation would constitute an infringement. although i'm no lawyer*, i would say that's probably an excusable violation. (thankfully we're not discussing the grammatically correct plurality of "NTP")

wiki has this to say about the nicks, and within that entry you will see use of the term "BlueBerrys"

moreover, adding an 's' to the term during a search will still trap all variations, whereas 'ies' will omit many.

* and no, i didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night!

Default Blackberrys

It's Blackberrys or Blackberry devices. It's a proper name so you don't follow conventional pluralisation rules.

For example:

"A room full of Amys"

as opposed to

"A room full of Amies"

How do I know? Wife used to work at Rogers and I had a similiar question when developing security policies at a client site

When You use a proper name it does not have to follow the normal rules, in this case BlackBerry is used as such so to use BlackBerrys is totally within the discretion of its manufacturer, which is what I believe that they have used in the past.

Here is the definitive rule:

Regular Plural Forms

The majority of English count nouns are regular and predictable in the spelling of the plural form. Add -s to the end of the singular form or -es to those singulars that end in a sibilant sound (/s/, /z/, /ts/, /dz/).

-s -es
boy - boys horse - horses
bed - beds edge - edges
book - books patch - patches
pencil -pencils prize - prizes
day - days box - boxes

However, if the singular ends with -y and the -y is not preceded by a vowel (or is not a proper name) the -y changes to -i and the plural is then -es.

-y becomes -ies -y becomes -ys
spy - spies osprey - ospreys
poppy - poppies bay - bays
penny - pennies Germany - Germanys

Does this make it clearer.
