Default Leaving Blackberry B/c No Gmail Rich Text Support

Please Login to Remove!

I assume a lot of you who use Gmail or who have associates who use Gmail know what I am talking about. I don't know if this has always happened or if Google made a change about a week and a half ago, but all of the email sent from Gmail's rich text format can no longer be read on a blackberry. Blackberry does not support the multipart/mixed format, which means that any email sent in the format Gmail uses in richtext cannot be displayed AT ALL.

Note that the issue is not that Blackberry does not display these emails in rich text, but rather the fact that it does not display the text at all.

So many of my associates use Gmail that about 20% of my emails are now totally unreadable, and rising. Given this, I am probably going to have to get rid of my blackberry and use some sort of Pocket PC. It's sad to have to do this, but when Blackberry doesn't support anything other than the most stripped-down emails, this is what happens.

I went straight through TMO technical support and into the 2nd-tier RIM support, at which point they told me flat-out that they don't support the format. Sucks for me I guess. But it also sucks for everybody else, and it will suck for RIM if they don't get their act together, because this incompatibility will render the BB useless, and has already rendered it useless for me. Many of you may not be experiencing this if you use your blackberries primarily to write within a corporate intranet, but for everybody else, it's a huge issue. I spent about 3-4 hours today trying to find a workaround, and couldn't find one.

(PS: Earlier in the week I posted a thread about how blackberries can't read multipart/mixed emails. At the time I was not aware of what was causing it, but since then I have traced it to Gmail rich text)

I haven't had that problem since creating a gmail account. All the emails I send from my gmail account come to my BB just fine and readable.

But is this with the rich text?

Occasionally it does work for me too. However, it never works when there are also attachments in richtext, and occasionally even when there are not attachments but I get a richtext email from somebody else (not myself), it also doesn't work. This has never been a problem with plain text.

I don't think BlackBerry supports rich text in email. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I get picture attachments (if they are in jpeg format) perfectly fine. I did have this problem with one of my 7100t's last year but I got a replacement BlackBerry and that problem was resolved.

Erica,

Thanks for the info. Did you get an identical replacement or was it an upgrade? I'm just trying to figure out if it is a hardware or software problem.

I have to receive a message via GMAIL that could not be read on my BB. I get all types to include RTF. HTML doesn't format but you can still read the message amung the code.

nor have I-- I get emails grom gmail users all the time. never had a problem. The worst I get is ocassionally HTML messages are sent with the code in the text makingit a little harder to read.

I wish there was a utility or hack (or rim would create something) that would allow us to remove html tages from incomming emails.

In any event, I would investigate this futher because it seems the problem is unique to you.

Okay, I am so sorry for my ignorance...but what exactly is rich text?

I seem to be getting all of my gmail's just fine.

Is this a certain setting that people can choose? I am curious to test it out once I figure out what it is.

It's an encoding/formatting protocol. Google rich text format.

What about checking gmail with the mobile app or wap site if you are having issues?

Using gmail's pop server for email on a handheld device is a nighmare. Sent email will show up in your inbox due to the way gmail threads all messages. PPC may not be the way to go either. So if by default you need to use the browser to view mail why make a change?

I have been using GMAIL as a filter for many accounts for a few months now. All mail is directed to GMAIL, and sent to my BB account through the options in GMAIL.
I know it isnt formatted like a laptop, but it isnt a laptop.

All my emails come in from gmail are pure plain text. I don't know where your rich text's coming from..

Some bad email clients send only rich-text version of an email but leaves the plain-text "part" blank. It has nothing to do with gmail but the sender's email client.
