Default Blackberry for JUST PHONE, NO DATA??

Please Login to Remove!

I am heavy Blackberry user. My wife doesnt know how to use it, which is fine, the kids love Brickbreaker.
Both of our cars were outfitted had hard install car kits. Since we used the same phones, it was interchangable. I could drive her car with the hands free kit, etc.
Anyway, I now use 7130 and love it. I was at Verizon today getting her one to use with no data plan. She is a housewife, doesnt need to email about car pools, book clubs, Bunko, etc., but it would be nice to have the cars set up again for the same phone. Verizon let me know you cant have blackberry without data plan.
Any way around that??
Another provider?
Please let me know.
Thank you.
Leon

why not? just do it. Better to get a used blackberry off e-bay though, so your not locked into a contract.

I have done exactly that.

I'm afraid all BB's will have the same "flaw". Sorry to break it to you. ;)

But let me tell you the truth.

Verizon may have different stipulations than say Cingular. I have removed the data plan several times from my Blackberry when I was between jobs and didnt need email. What was Cingular going to do, take back my blackberry?

What would Verizon do? Take back yours if you remove the data package. They cant. They probably meant to get the rebate you had to have the data package (same with Cingular). But after you get the rebate back, you should be able to remove the package. Keep in mind that I don't have Verizon, so I am not 100% sure about that, just 99.9% sure

What they do is put you on a per kb plan and you have to be the one not to use it. If you dont then you wont be charged, I know because I set up my son that way for a while to see if he liked the Blackberry as a phone first before signing up. He didnt, but for the two months we had it he did not get charged, btw i hid any icons that had anything to do with the data plan so as not ot tempt him and safeguard myself the charges but it worked fine.

One of the handsets on my Cingular account is a 7100g with voice service and SMS only, no pay-per-use plan or anything. (Display always shows "Data Connection Refused") Rep gave me no trouble setting it up, I just didn't qualify for the rebate they were offering at the time.

Did get the joke, my sarcastic reply was lost in the lack of voice inflection.
Thanks for all the replys.
Called Verizon on phone and tech told me same thing, can get a per minute data plan, just dont use it. I will do that and hide icons and not set up email.
Thanks a bunch for your help.

FWIW, SunCom generally doesn't care if you want voice-only on a Blackberry. You may not get all of the discounts (depending on current promotions) and the sales rep might give you a hard time
Also, the data features would be completely unavailable on the device.

I have a BB and no data plan.

Why? Well...
1) Couldn't have a camera phone at work (nor did I want one)
2) Wanted Bluetooth capability
3) Didn't want to spend a lot on a phone

That took me down to exactly two phones at Cingular. I could either get a refurb BB 7100g for $70, or a Samsung flip phone (and I don't really like flip phones) for $140.

I went with the BlackBerry.

Just so you know, you can call Cingular customer service and they can change it so you don't get "Data Connection Refused" anymore. They can change it so it only uses the GSM network and does not attempt to jump on the GPRS network. I had to have them do it to one of mine.

Actually the BB without data's very usable.. I put a prepaid sim on an old bb while travelling for voice calls only with my address book backup/restored on it. That alone is much better than any cell phone on the market..

If you wish, you may follow the guide here to remove that message and display the operator name.

http://blackberryforums.com/showthread.php?t=29358

Additionally, if you call Cingular, they will remove the ability to access GPRS, and your handset will display GSM and the operator name, and not even attempt to connect to the GPRS net. This is how I had my Cingular 7290 set up.
