Default MDS needed?

Please Login to Remove!

I just want to understand what a service like MyBlueberry would do for me if I was to get a 7100g from Cingular. I have no need for any kind of wireless sync. I just want to have my email from a couple of accounts forwarded to me, I want to be able to use Verichat, and I want to be able to browse HTML sites. A while ago I read that MDS was needed in order to receive attachments in my email.....is that still the case with the 7100? What about receiving picture attachments and then viewing the pictures? What exactly would this service do for me? I'd rather not pay $10/month if its not necessary.

VeriChat - depending on your provider, this should work without MDS
HTML browsing - depending on your provider, this should work without MDS
Picture Attachments - currently requires BES

Within the next month or two or whenever they decide, all North American providers will be upgrading to BIBS/BWC 4.0. This sort of includes MDS capabilities. Some people have stated openly that a 3rd party (or corporate) BES/MDS is faster for browsing for them (I administer a corporate BES, so I do not have anything to compare against as I've never used BWC).

What about other attachments? Which ones are supported by the BWC?

You can view these attachments through just BWC:
DOC, TXT, XLS, PDF

Perhaps one or two other formats, not sure which ones. No embedded images without BES, no fancy formatting without BES.

Verichat will work without BES on Cingular, it just takes a little bit of hoop-jumping with the Cingular representatives to enable the Internet features on the BlackBerry.

HTML browsing will definitely work on Cingular, and even if the BlackBerry browser is not enabled, you can get Reqwireless WebViewer 4.0 at http://www.reqwireless.com (get the corporate BlackBerry version)

You sound like a user who can probably get by without BES. Just be prepared for a little bit of hoop-jumping on the phone with Cingular in the first week or two. You can always get BES later for $10 to $25 per month (see Hosted BES FAQ)
