Default Stick Blackberry to Laptop?

Please Login to Remove!

Now that I've got tethering working properly on my shiny new 8700, I need a good solution for lugging the thing around.

I use my laptop in criminal hearings (I'm an Asst Public Defender), and I'm often running from courtroom to courtroom, laptop in hand. My courthouse doesn't have pluginnable or wireless Internet, so having my Blackberry to serve portable bandwidth is REALLY convenient (I can go online to check on a case for a client, etc.)

The only problem is the setup ... when I'm in a hurry, I don't always have the time to take out the blackberry, hook it up, connect it, etc.

Does anyone know of a good solution to attach the blackberry to my laptop's lid? It'd have to be relatively sturdy (i.e. not fall off when I'm lugging the laptop) and not cause any permanent damage or marks to the laptop (since it's the county's, not mine).

I was thinking of something like a low-end pouch (leather? neoprene?) to hold the BB, affixed to the lid with high-end superstrong Velcro ... anyone have any ideas? Is there already a product for this?

well, you might run in to the same problem if you have to remove the velcro, on my laptop, i can't put too much pressure on it before the lid starts to flex.

and i can't imagine that your it dept would like getting your laptop back with a section of velcro glued to it.

maybe you could look into using bluetooth? it would mean attaching a small usb dongle to your laptop, if it isn't equipped with it already. then you could leave your bb in your holster or bag.

EDIT: for speeling errors....lol

If your BB is a GSM model perhaps you could get a wireless modem card for your laptop and use that instead. Before you go into court you could take the SIM card out of your BB and put it the modem.

What about removing the beltclip portion of your plastic holster.

Velcro the hoslter to the Top of the Laptop and then slide the BB in. The BB should stay and you can leave the bb plugged in to the laptop.

Does the 8700 work as a modem over Bluetooth? I thought they only worked like that via USB.

Default Hmmm

Bluetooth won't work, sadly ... rumor has it that SharkModem will allow tethering via BlueTooth, but the standard Blackberry-as-a-modem feature is USB-only. SharkModem has other limitations, too (5 connections ... more software to install ... you have to go through a localhost proxy, so you have to custom-config every internet app), so I'm sticking with USB.

Bluetooth would be nice, though. Just talk to the BB on my hip.

As for velcro--I figured I'd use that 3M adhesive that comes off nice and clean. It is a good point about the strain, though ... I'd hate to be tugging on the screen all the time.

Maybe one of those tight-fit neoprene cases that you can leave on while you use the laptop ... then I could just slide the BB into a pocket.
