Unfortunatly, I'm in the UK, and can only set up a googlemail.com account, which doesn't work with the BB Google Talk app.

If you're non-Uk based, and you have a gmail account you should be able to send yourself an invite and set it up. PM me, please, with the password you used, & I can then take over the account.

Won't an invite from a gmail member do the trick?

Nope. It decides, it seems, on your location based on your IP when you visit the link from the invite to sign up. Tried that already
