This may seem silly but does he actually have a phone number in that address contact? If there is no phone number it has nothing to dial same with trying to send an sms. I have done this that is why I ask.

This is a valid question, he deffo has the number in the address book.

When you go to place call it goes through to the phone option but then does not dial.

If you go to the address book and select the contact, click the trackwheel and what options are in the menu displayed?

Default Same issue with a user here.

User has an 8700 (not sure if T-Mobile or Cingular). He clicked on a name and chose "Call <So-and-so>". The device asked him if he wanted to dial the work or cell # listed in the entry. He chose one and it went to the phone app, but never dialed the number.

The user called me back and said that if he opens the phone applet, then chooses "Call from Address Book" on the menu, he is able to select a person and have it dial their phone number. It's only if he starts at the address book that he has the above issue.
