That would be very unnerving considering how many users (myself included at one time) that post their PINS on this forum. A telemarketer's dream!

No, it's totally impossible.

Every BB has a unique PIN. Even BBs without phones (850/950/5790) have PINs. There is no relationship between the PIN and the phone number. You can't tell the carrier from the PIN. Even if you knew the carrier, they would not give you the phone number.

Considering I can swap SIM cards at will into a BlackBerry - each of which will change my phone number - while still retaining the same PIN number, I don't see how they are related.

unless you can 'hack' into the carrier, then hack into their on-demand tower registration system, and determine which SIM card a given PIN and IMEI number is using. (maybe you'd have to hack into RIM as well and cross reference the PIN the IMEI registration, then hack back into the carrier to determine which IMEI registered my SIM card. Then with that, hack into the carrier's billing or activation records and cross reference my SIM card to my phone number. Assuming I haven't just recently ported my number!!

err, yeah, I'm talking out of my ass. Assume you could do all that, sure, why not. Maybe you could do it. David Lane would be impressed.

you can send out a mass group pin. BUT you cannot store a group list for pins. potential (telemarketer for bb) problem. lets pray it does not happen

Does the carrier even get your PIN? I know they use your IMEI to provision your service. I know my BES folks can see my PIN but I have never known TMO to ask or mention my PIN??? Now RIM might know your PIN but they can careless about your number???

There is a way to get a phone number from a BB pin. Send a pin message and ask for their phone number. Hehehe.

Actually, you can tell what carrier the BlackBerry is for by the PIN. I dont know the specifics, but I just had a discussion with a coworker who returned from WES. he mentioned that he "finally found out what the PIN numbers mean". Didn't have the time to ask more at the moment. I will see if I can get more info tomorrow.

You can tell what technology the BB is using from the PIN. You can not tell the carrier.

Simple proof. The PIN on my BB is 20000001

It is a GSM/GPRS BlackBerry. But you can't tell what carrier because I got it unlocked and am using another SIM card in it.

The first digit of the PIN is significant; 2 = GSM; 3 = CDMA; 4 = iDen, but you can not tell the carrier from it.

But when you get the BB to associate with BES 4.1, it shows the phone number on the BES. So all you guys subscribing to BES hosting, they are likely to have a record of your BB phone number.
