Has anyone ever heard of this?

We have one of our chief officers receiving email from someone with the same first initial and last name OUTside the company, that matches a guy INside the company. For instance Mark Smith and Matt Smith. When he receives any email from the person outside the company, the blackberry (and not his lotus notes), changes the email to be the internal sendto address.

We've checked his local address book on the bb, synched, deleted and synched, and are now baffled. I can't figure out what's causing this. There are no address entries in his local BB that don't match notes. He has the outside contact specified with the correct email address (msmith@blahblah.com), and is linked to the corporate address book, which contains the similar name (mark.smith@dohdoh.net).

I'm stumped. I asked Cingular, and they said it was an address book problem, and since my company won't spring for a TSupport contract, I can't get in touch with RIM. Ugh!

Any help or suggestions would kick ass. Thanks!

(P.S. - this unit is indeed on a BES, version 4.0, with Lotus Domino on the back end)

first off, Cingular should still be able to transfer you to RIM

just for clarification...i'm assuming your chief is receiving this other person's email

is there a BIS account set up? it's possible that this outside person has set up a forwarding rule to the wrong BIS address

i.e. he thinks his is , however this is your cheifs and the outside guy's address is actually

It makes sense, but it's a complicated thing..

Basically...

He receives an email from the personal email address of said person (msmith@).
Lotus notes shows the email coming from the correct person.
The blackberry shows the email as coming from an internal person, NOT the actual person that sent it. i.e. - the from address and name changes from person A, to person B (who is on the global address book inside the company).

The email in question is not going through BIS, but to his corporate (BES) email address.

I hope this makes more sense. It hurts my head trying to explain it in text. hehe

so this outside person is not a stranger

it definitly sounds like an address book issue
have you tried clearing the address book database (backup/restore -> advanced)then re-syncing? in case the database has gotten corrputed

make sure you do a backup of the database BEFORE clearing it so you can restore it if it doesn't fix the problem

if this doesn't work i'd call Cingular back and persist until they get you over to RIM - or at the very least they're BlackBerry support department (not the general level support)
