Default Do I still need Text Messaging with Cingular Unlimited BB Plan?

Please Login to Remove!

I'm moving from a normal phone to a Blackberry and have an unlimted text messaging plan now that I use 99% only to recieve e-mail alerts from Yahoo-mail letting me know I have new mail (forwarded from gmail). Since Gmail does not offer direct text messages to alert me of new e-mails, I forward my Gmail to a Yahoo account and get the alerts via Yahoo. I don't forward gmail emails directly to the phone because the messages are too long and get split into annoying separate little messages.

If I switch to a Blackberry with the unlimited Blackberry data plan, will there be any need to have text messaging service also?
I assume the BB will give instant alerts when new mail comes into the Gmail account and there will no longer be any need to receive text messages for this purpose. Most months I send out zero outoing text messages and receive a few hundred incoming alerts of new mail. I send out maybe 10 or 20 outgoing text messages in a year with my current phone and would probably just use gmail to e-mail a message instead of SMS when I get the new Blackberry.
I assume the unlimited BB data plan also includes unlimited web browsing.

It sounds like you're understanding everything correctly.

Yes, the Cingular Blackberry plan does include web browsing but does not include text messaging. If you set up your GMAIL account on your Blackberry you can set the Blackberry to alert you in a variety of way when new mail arrives.

If you wish to receive text messages and not have to pay for them individually-- Yes, I would recommed it. Otherwise you may get several at one time for one message.

I'd say get a cheap plan-- For like 10 bucks or something.. give yourself 250. Just to cover the basics.

Since I was really only using the text messages to get e-mail alerts, I'm not seeing any reason to keep a text message plan after I start getting e-mail pushed directly to the BB. The BB data plan is expensive enough without adding extra for text messages.

I have no text messaging plan either.

I do little text messaging so I can not justify adding it. Even the little I do, paying per message, doesn't come out to more than the cost of a text messaging plan.

Find the link with all the carriers messaging emails. I have set up all my text people as emails, so that way you will not be charged. As long as you are composing text as an email then your unlimited data plan covers that.

ex: [email address]
