Default ESN's to be replaced by Mobile Equipment Identifier (MEID)

Please Login to Remove!

Hey all,
Has anyone heard of the ESN's being replaced by MEIDs, and how to check to see if your system is capable of handling the new MEID serial numbers?

Heres a news article I got my hands on.
"In the coming months, there will be a change to the way wireless devices are tracked.

Currently, all wireless devices have an 11-digit Electronic Serial Number (ESN) as part of a standardized numbering system. Each device has a unique ESN that allows wireless carriers to track it for billing, security, inventory and activation purposes.

According to the Telecommunications Industry Association, the pool of ESNs will run out for some manufacturers as early as June 2006. As a result, the Association is now developing an alternative. The Mobile Equipment Identifier (MEID) will consist of 18 digits and will be applied to new handsets.

If you currently have systems that track your wireless devicesí ESNs, please ensure that they will be capable of handling the new NEID serial number."

Thanks
Shaner

Yes, it is coming. This obviously only affects CDMA users as GSM and iDEN carriers use the international IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identifier) standard.

Before you ask questions, you should read a little moe carefully. At the end of your post it says that the old stansard will be capable of handling the new.

actually it says that if anyone has a system that tracks ESN's to make sure that it will be compatible with the new MEID format (although they mistyped it NEID).
